Moodboards

The moodboard above shows in red the proposed site for the building. The image above shows the plot at Dundee Centre, next to the new V&A at Dundee.

The image above shows another proposal site for the build. This one is set on the outskirts of Dundee's Broughty Ferry area.

The image above shows a birds eye view of the plots and the surrounding area.

The image above shows Interior Design inspiration for the Proposed Restaurant development.

The images above and below show inspriational lighting, indoor and outdoor examples have been given as i believe exterior lighting may be shown in the finished visualisation.

Images above and below show expamples of Architecture and interior design of the Architect Kengo Kuma, who's design was chosen for the V&A at Dundee and is an inspiration for the restaurant build.

Building Plans

The image above shows another view of the development site and has a scale.

Scale View of Development Site

Using the scaled plan view above i have created the scale drawings below to accurate size.

Artistic Impressions of Build

Below are some artist impressions of the exterior and interior of the build, this shows scale and how it will interact with the water and surrounding environment.

Thumbnails

Below are three sets of thumbnails of how i may approach the visualisation.

Above is the thumbnails i intend on using for the visualisation. I will now create a storyboard and animatic to show a more in depth visual.

  Further Research

Foot research planned of development plot.

I thought it was important that i saw the proposed build site for myself. The pictures below were taken by myslef when i went to further research on foot the site.

Panoramics

The panoramic iamges below are important as this view is why people would like to eat at the restaurant when build. I saw its importance and using two different methods made the following panoramic shots of the view from the site. Using photoshop i managed to stitch the images from my research together to give a flawless shot. I will use this in the visualisation as a selling point for the build.

Viktor Fretyan has won numorous awards for his Architectural Visualisations.

Above is a visualisation by Viktor Fretyan. The visual is in fact an advert for a television, but created in 3ds max it shows modern architecture amoungst other things. What i like about this visual is his use of slow panning shots and very slight zooming. These camera shots are easy on the eye and although later on in the visualisation he has some faster jump cuts he sticks to these simple shots. Also Viktor uses some diagonal shots to break up panning shots and help gain interest.

Created by Bertrand Benoit this visualisation shows a renovated swedish building. What i notice in this visual as well as slow moving si,ple camera movements is the rule of thirds seems to be in place in either the beginning or end of every shot. Everything is slightly off centre helping to create intregue. Also the camera itself seems to have a slight bobbing motion also adding intregue. Shot @ 13secs seems like an obvious example of the rule of thirds to me. The bed is sitting on the bottom 3rd horizontal line and the wall is on the first left vertical line.

Whilst researching i have found that many artists such as Arunim Chatterjee prefer to have still shots of the project. This i think is also a good idea as it goved the viewer time time to really see whats going on in the shot. They can take in more information, lighting, textures, composition to name a few. Also he uses "Clay Render" shots to show his Global Illumination which also gives the viewer a chance to interprete lighting whithin the scene. The reason i have added this is because the artists who created this work has not won awards he has still managed to create a compeling and inspiring piece.

Ben Prince has created another nice example of an Arch Viz.Camera movement only hapens in 1 direction at a time allowing the viewer to take in whats happening.
Again i have added this to show that there are many artists who have the technical ability but are not as popular as major artists they try just as hard tho.

Above is perhaps the most perfect visualisation i have seen (for what my opinion is worth). Alex Roman has created something more than a visualisation, this is an artform. His composition, his camera movements, lighting, modelling, the atmosphere and feeling behind this visual is amazing, i love it. This to me is perfection. His camera movements are simple but only add intregue to the visual. If there is animation or movement within the visual it is minimalist. I believe the narrative si to show architecture as art through the camera. We see the camera many times in is a friend on our journey. The visual splits between abstract and surreal which keeps you hooked also the hyper realism has you wondering what is or isnt and what may or may not be real. It feels as if your watching a dream but because of how visualy real it looks you believe what you are seeing.

Composition

Above is a diagram of how easily the human eye can read movement. If the camera is moving from top left to bottom right we can follow and understand easily whats going on, but if we reverse that and go from bottom right to top left we struggle to take in informatio. It feels less natural.

Annotated Research

Sergio Mereces - http://www.sergiomereces.com/

Sergio Mereces is a freelance artist who has won several awards for his inspiring Visions.

Below is a set of images by an Artists i admire. I have given information on why i like each image.

I will use the above images as inspiration. Try to find interesting and sutable composition to best showcase my Visualisation.

 Lighting

Peter Oldorf - http://www.ronenbekerman.com/making-of-tomczak-house/
Peter Oldorf studied graphics design in Rostock, Germany.

Below another artists who inspires me. What i like is his simplistic approach to his images. There is no fancy after effects or lighting.

Further Research into my lighting led me to create some quick lighting images. I have created this on black card, using chalk to replicate what light may do.

The image above shows light entering through the ribbed windows on the roof of the restaurant.

The above image shows light entering through the windows on both side walls of the build.

This image shows light from the end facade (opposite water) the bottom window is same hight as floor.

This is just research light acts in a hard to predict way, But i believe this is how it may act coming in thrugh the windows before bouncing and reflections occour.
Above is the style of lighting i would like in my project . Simple lighting with simple soft shadows. Bright daytime light to help showcase the restaurant in its prime. A summers day.

For my Research i have been using magazines which had sections on Arch Viz. Below are some of the pages used.

3D ARTIST ISSUE 52

Sergio mereces

Sergio Mereces is a freelance artist who has won several awards for his inspiring Visions.

In the article Sergio explains that it is not just about the image that will compel people to look, it is the atmosphere, the camera angle and a clear storyline. In the article he says “giving your work a story turns it from a simple image into something with a stronger sense of visual impact” also he says “when I start any of my jobs the first step is always to think about the aspect of the image and how people are going to view it. It really helps me inform composition of the scene”. I have taken from this article that a strong understanding of what my story and narrotive is must be understood before proceeding forward with the project. I must have a clear understanding of what i am trying to communicate with my "audience" in my case investors.

3D WORLD March 2013

In the above lighting article Chris Kowal ( a digital illistrator and 3d instructor) looks closely at technical decisions and aesthetic choices he made to light his "Riverside Mill". I chose to research this peice as it is an Arch Viz exploring lighting also it is by the water another similarity to my project. In the article Chris talks about how everything has an impact on your final lit scene, such as materials, open space and different types of lighting in general like daylight systems etc He talks of his decisions on lighting the interior and exterior of his Mill. What i have taken from this article is that there are many different solutions to lighting and i should try more than one or two to find the best solution to my lighting in my visualisation.

Research Conclusion

From the above research i have concluded that to create a striking and professional looking Visualisation i should follow the bullet points below, by following these bullet points i will give myself the best chance of achieving a striking piece of Architectural Visualisation. A strong visualisation is about emotion and is about as much as you dont see as what you do.

  • Storyline - I should have a clear understanding of the storyline/narrative i want to comminicate with my audience. This should influence the overall visual.
  • Composition - Now that i understand composition rules i should be careful of camera movement and angles to create a visualy appealing finish. These rules can be broken by people who know what they are doing, but by paying close attention to the rules i give myself a greater chance of achieveing my aims. I can experiment with low quality renders in 3ds max.
  • Lighting - Above i have made decisions on what i would like my lighting to be like. Bright and clean with minimum  lighting effects. I am of course always open to change, change can be good and my project may evolve with time. I want to comminicate Dundees long lasting relationshipwith the River Tay and the dockland area, also Dundee is constantly evolving and reinventing itself, i will make this Visualisation part of this evolution. The message will be that Dundee is a vibrant river side city and will keep evolving with the times.

Compositional Images

Below i have been experimenting with strong compositional shots of the building. I have used photoshop to try and find suitable angles that best showcase the restaurant. I have used the research i have learned above.

This shot above is meant to show off the builds strong angles from the western approach.

The image above shows the large glass window at the front, from the water. This showcases the glass fronted feature.

Again another shot from the western approach.

This shot from the east this time shows the builds relationship with the water.

The two images above are again meant to demonstrate the relationship between the building and the water.

Thumbnails

Below are thumbnails of shots i think will be suitable using my knowledge of composition for my visualisation.

For the above set of thumbnails i have chosen only three variations of shot, a zoom and a pan both vertically and horizontally, tho not at the same time. From my research i have realised the more refined the camera angle the less movement you need.

Above is a set of alternate thumbnails.

Below is the storyboard for my animation.
